The CRALL

Known as "The Fifth Race", the Crall remains a mystery to almost everyone in the galactic Confederacy.

Nomadic spacefarers, the Crall are…basically… hard to find.

An undisclosed cataclysmic event, that destroyed their Homeworld, sent the Crall into space in powerful generation ships. They move unseen from planetary system to planetary system—stopping only to re-supply their convoy on a trek to nowhere.

The Crall avoid contact with other races.  Everything in the Cralls’ existence is geared towards survival.

Occasionally, a Crall will fall into Con-Fed hands—usually it is a scout or forward observer from the Crallian fleet who makes a fatal miscalculation. Those unfortunate prisoners usually kill themselves within months of capture. The Crallian lust for freedom is a tangible, dominating drive in the species.

To the present day, the Con-Feds avoid direct confrontation with the Crall—a cautionary approach fueled by rumors of advanced weapons of horrible destructive power.

Notably, Crallians have jet black skin—looking almost like polished marble. Combined with their tentacle-like hair that acts like feelers and fiery eyes, they are imposing to behold and terribly-fierce warriors who show little mercy to those not of their race. The Crall can also double their body mass by consuming a large quantity of food and rapidly converting it into energy—making them formidable and deadly opponents.

In the story of Colony, the Crall known as Faz is the only one of his kind to be held alive. But unbeknownst to his captors, Faz has been sent as an observer—to examine the absolute worst of human nature and to, eventually, pass judgment on our race.  What better place to see what humans are really like than in the hellhole environment of the prison planet.

The TAULIANS

The Taul, the indigenous biped lifeform of the prison planet they call ‘Erus’, has been conscripted as cheap labor—second-class citizens, considered as inferior primitives who are treated no better than slaves by the Confederacy. Passive and subservient by nature, the Taul possesses a startling secret which has eluded everyone—except for Landus. Since the Taul possess an almost hive-like mentality, when Landus speaks to any one of them—he actually speaks with many. The Taul are not terribly articulate.  It’s their broken English that gives the impression that the Taul are ignorant savages.  (The Taul themselves are allegories to the Aborigines that populated Australia at the time of its colonization.)

It is the Taulians’ spiritual devotion to the ancient god—The Immaculate Consciousness, that begins to awaken Scott’s suspicions about the nature of this curious planet.   As the saga of COLONY progresses, Landus will  discover crude glyphs (inTaulian) that will translate as follows:

“In truth, the Liberator will be a slave! Therefore, O Erus, consciousness of immaculate purity; harbor no feelings of anger or disdain; regard not too sternly the errors and crimes of your frail parts but instead-- turn your wrath outward towards the trans-gressions of Flesh. “

Taulian spirituality chronicles a close relationship between themselves and the planet. Taulian belief does not place their species apart from or on a higher level than nature itself.

The BAL TRAPHU (pronounced

“ball traf-oo”)

The B.T’s are, for lack of a better term, arrogant.

They are a highly secretive race, whose religious beliefs are still not known to the Con-Feds who conquered them.

They are albino-looking in appearance—with long white hair and skin with red, hollow eyes. Their fingers and toes have an extra phalange—making their fingers long and creepy.  They are the only other culture, besides the Con-Fed, whose law prescribes death for violation of racial purity.

Because they believe that they are the chosen species of God, they refuse to speak any language other than their own.  If you want to have a conversation with a B.T.—you’d better have a transcom (translator) computer in your pocket.

The Bal Traphu believe that their being conquered by the Confederacy is all part of a grand design—a punishment for an undisclosed racial transgression against their god, Bal. As a result, they tend to accept their fate on Colony, being highly compliant and obedient.

They live out their miserable lives waiting for Bal’s Judgment Day, when Bal will set them free and carry them all to the “promised land”.

The Traphu are empathic by nature, with senses keenly attuned to the emotions around them—much like sentient lie detectors.

In Colony, their rations are chemically dosed to suppress this inherent ability.

Much like the Taul, the B.T.s will come to believe that Landus’ rebellion against the Con-Fed empire is the fulfillment of Bal’s prophesy. This will cause a heated conflict between the Taul and the BTs—because, in their eyes, Landus is only allowed to be the fulfillment a single faith—theirs.

Dear Colony Fans,

Back in November, series penciller and comics legend Dick Giordano requested the holiday months off  from Colony to complete work on another big comic project.  As it turned out, I wound-up making a move into new digs, which necessitated yet another delay in my getting to the latest installment of Colony.

Rest assured that Dickie, Ian & I will be back in February with all-new episodes of Colony as we move towards the summer's events that will uncover startling revelations and huge changes for the series' main characters.  In the meantime, I'm presenting the second of two  never-before-seen character profiles pages of the main players in the saga.  This background information was taken directly from the 70 page Colony Continuity Bible that I created as reference for the television series' show runner.

Next month, when Episode 7 premieres, you'll learn one of the startling secrets of the Taulians and their relationship to our hero!

Enjoy,

Bob Layton
