CARBON KNIGHT Once David Michelinie and I began work revamping and updating the plot to 'IRON MAN:THE END', we quickly realized that we’d have to come up with a new, armored character for the exciting conclusion to the finale’ of the career of Tony Stark. In the original plot that we drafted back in 2001, the character was to be Metallix. But, as all Bob Layton.com fans know, a revamped version of Metallix went on to become one of the flagship characters of the Future Comics line. So recently, I’ve been playing around with various armor designs that incorporated some aspects of Iron Man and some unique elements. Although this design won’t be used in the final draft, I thought it would be fun to share the rejected drawing with you as I continue to work on developing this new character. And, yes—the name is an homage’ to the metal in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’. The technology is based on carbon fiber-nano tubes--which served as the inspiration for the character's name.
