SILVER
CENTURION
This
illustration was a interesting challenge since the fellow who
commissioned it requested something with the silver armor that had
a hint of Doctor Doom in the composition.
This
is the result.

IRON
MAN #100
This
drawing was a request for my interpretation of the classic Iron
Man #100 cover by Jim Starlin.
I
really didn't change much other than adding my usual I.M.
metal techniques.

IRON
MAN #230 (UNPUBLISHED)
This
was my original submission for the cover to the last issue of the
Armor Wars (#230) and with Iron Man in the Silver Centurion armor.
As fate would have it, Marvel rejected the layout, citing it as
being too graphic.
The paste-ups are new. Everything else is as you would
have seen it at the end of the Armor Wars.

IRON
MAN #118 RECREATION*
This
is a recreation of one of my more lauded covers--voted by Wizard
as one of the top 100 covers of all time.
By
the way--the original design was a collaboration between myself
and then Marvel cover art director--the Great Dave Cockrum.

|
IRON
MAN #150 RECREATION
This
was a rare instance where I did a Iron Man recreation by a
penciler other than myself. I eventually emailed J.R.J.R.
and he gave his blessing. |

IRON
MAN POSTER VARIANT
This
was done for my old pal and #1 Iron Man enthusiast, Matt Hull. He
asked me to recreate the "Hall of Iron" poster I did in
the 80's but with older armors. I was particularly happy
with the outcome of this piece. So was Matt.

SOLAR #1 YEARBOOK COVER
This
was a proposed Valiant cover to a Solar Yearbook that
never saw print. I forget what the exact story was going to
be--but the illo is still worth a look.

MIKE
ZECK /BOB LAYTON INKS COMMISSION
Believe
it or not--this commission was the first time I've ever had the
opportunity to ink over of my personal favorites--the extremely
talented Mike Zeck. And--since it had Dr. Doom in it, I
could hardly resist the offer to finish the piece. |

|
X-O
#2 RECREATION
Again,
he's an example of my recreating an image originally penciled by
someone else--in this case, the fantastic Barry Windsor-Smith.
Happily for all, the final product came out very close to the
original.

|
X-MEN
#122 COVER RECREATION
This
was done inside of a sketch book, so the quality of the paper was
a bit tough to work with (not to mention having to deal with the
spine and other drawings in the book). However, the final product
came out surprisingly well.

MAGNUS #25 COVER:
This
is an alternate version of the scene that eventually became the
Magnus #25 cover. You'll see that I opted to go with a more
dynamic pose in the published version--that's why this piece was
never used. I recently found this page and inked it for a Valiant
collector in Sweden
.

 |
IRON
MAN VS CAPTAIN
AMERICA
This
was an interesting commission that challenged me to interpret a
classic Jack Kirby “Tales of Suspense” cover with my own
approach to rendering.
I
tried to keep as much of the Kirby dynamics as possible.

MAGNUS
#2 UNPUBLISHED COVER
This
was the first version of the Magnus #2 cover. We later went
with a different angle to create greater visual impact.

Solar
superhero MODEL SHEET
The
Solar superhero version is close to the one we finally went with
for the character. You can obviously see my Marvel
influences showing and the lack of BWS inspiration in this concept
drawing.

PUNISHER
ILLUSTRATION
Here's
a character that I've never had the opportunity to draw
before--The Punisher. Actually--I missed the movie, as well. (Although
I've been told that I didn't miss much.) |

DR.
TOMORROW #12 UNPUBLISHED COVER
I
submitted this cover design to Acclaim Comics before walking off
the book but never turned in the final, inked version.
Once the E.I.C. ordered me to change the agreed upon ending to the
series (he wanted to keep the characters alive in V2), I told him
to get someone else to write it.
Unfortunately, for you guys—he did. |
