IRON MAN #174 COVER recreation

This piece is an homage to the Luke McDonnell/ Steve Mitchell cover which featured a hoard of flying Iron Men.. (Unfortunately, almost all of the armor designs on the published version were incorrect). Even though it was respectfully meant as an homage', I took it upon myself to correct the mistakes in the armors and add a few finishing touches of my own.

HULK ANNUAL #7 RECREATION

A local fan of mine, Gary Hart of St Petersburg, FL, is a huge fan of Marvel's Hulk Annual #7, my first professional collaboration with fellow CPL fanzine alumni Roger Stern and John Byrne.

I did my best to accommodate Gary's request by doing the recreation complete with the original trade dress.

HULK ANNUAL #7 VARIANT VERSION

Gary,  being a huge fan of that Hulk Annual #7, also suggested that I try my hand at creating an alternate version of that famous cover by Byrne and me.

With a few helpful suggestions from Mr. Hart, and a few borrowed images from the talented Mr. Byrne, this is the result.

Unpublished X-O MANOWAR#1 cover

Before Marketing Wizard Jon Hartz came up with the name of "X-O", Jim had rejected this cover of the unnamed armored character for being "way too Marvel looking". On the back of the page is a doodle of Conan that I did one day when I was talking on the phone. (CLICK HERE>>) It was that doodle that eventually gave the three of us the idea to change the concept from a modern-day abductee to a Goth warrior from 800 A.D.

kerry gammell power man & iron fist

This inking assignment was commissioned by Larry Clay of Wisconsin.

Larry asked me if I'd be interested in inking a drawing by an old friend of mine--Kerry Gammell.  Kerry and I use to work together on covers for Power Man & Iron Fist many years ago, so it was a real treat to get another opportunity to do it again.  Thanks, Larry.

MAGNUS: ROBOT FIGHTER VS. ULTRON

This is another piece commissioned by Larry Clay who posed the question to me: "What if Magnus: Robot Fighter fought an army of Ultrons?" If a picture is worth a thousand words--here's your answer, Larry, old pal!

Although this image looks like its a double-page spread on this web page, the original is only 9" x 11". (Heh-Heh--fooled you!)

PAUL RYAN IRON MAN

Paul is a former assistant of mine and someone who I am very proud of. This  drawing was sent to me, printed on the Bristol Board in non-repro blue ink. The difficulty with that process is that you can't erase the pencils underneath.  So, if you make any adjustments to the drawing, they are clearly visible to the naked eye. However, as you can see from the thumbnail, the pencils aren't visible to the scanner.

TUSKA/LAYTON 4 iron men

The next four pieces that I recently inked were commissioned by my old pal and primo Iron Man fan, Daren Domina.

This illustration, featuring four, different versions of Iron Man,  was penciled by good ol' George Tuska but needed a little embellishment to really make it shine. I really like the final result.

LIM/LAYTON IRON MAN VS. KANG

I leaped at the opportunity to ink my friend and Future Comics alumni, Ron Lim, on an Iron Man piece.

Note that I added some background elements in order to give the page a finished cover look to it.

(I knew Ron certainly wouldn't mind me doing a little embellishing.)

tuska iron man sans helmet

The last one from Daren's collection is another Tuska Iron Man. The only problem inking it was that the proportions were slightly out of whack.  I took it upon myself to adjust the drawing here and there, while attempting to preserve the integrity of George's stylish work.

Mark Texera IRON MAN

This pencil drawing was a real treat, having never had the opportunity to ink Mark Texera pencils before now.

I've always been a fan of Mark's work and he's a really good guy, to boot.

I liked the feeling of this piece and tried my best to do it justice.
